PROTECT OUR DOLPHINS (POD) of Santa Barbarais a brand-new and much-needed organization dedicated to protecting our dolphin neighbors in Santa Barbara and surrounding areas. Directed by internationally renowned author and marine mammal behavioral biologist, Dr. Toni Frohoff, we are now focusing almost 25 years of experience in research and protection of dolphins around the world on our Santa Barbara dolphins. Featured in the December 2009 issues of both Santa Barbara and Discovery Channel Magazine,Dr. Frohoff has recently arrived in Santa Barbara to help establish an *all-volunteer* and truly non-profit to address the increasing needs and challenges facing these dolphins.
For beautiful dolphin POD pendants created by the inimitable Santa Barbara sculptor, Bud Bottoms, please visit the animal-friendly, fabulous, and non-profit Santa Barbara Arts in La Arcada Plaza or call them 805-884-1938 ... we are grateful for their generosity!
We also appreciate your patience in our responding to volunteer and other communications ... we are current creating an even stronger infrastructure to support students and others!
The coastal bottlenose dolphins in Santa Barbara and surrounding waters need our help now*.These dolphins are now facing a myriad of unprecedented environmental challenges, many of which we share with them in our coastal community. With their very small population (perhaps as few as 350 individuals along the entire California coast), dwindling pod size (a sign of stress and challenges to survival), lesions on their skin related to contaminants, severely high contaminant levels in their bodies, and exceptionally high risk from to additional coastal environmental threats, these animals both deserve and need our support.
Did
you know that there is no intensive study, monitoring or
educational effort for the dolphins who live right here in our own
oceanic backyard? Long-term research on these dolphins have been implemented along other areas of these dolphin's California coastal habitat ... but not here in the beautiful, yet oil-imbued waters of Santa Barbara. With all of the beauty, joy, and environmental
significance these dolphins share with us - we now need to give
something back to them - and can no longer afford to take their
presence for granted.
Through the long-standing, all-volunteer "umbrella" 501(c)3 organization under which POD is the priority project, TerraMar Research, we are engaged in pioneering research, education, and community and government-related projects to address these needs. The world is changing and so we must change also. Through protecting dolphins, we help ourselves and our shared coastal habitat for the benefit of generations of dolphin and human children to come.
